Wild about butterflies
Butterflies pollinate flowers when they visit them to feed on nectar. Furthermore, many other animals eat caterpillars, chrysalises and butterflies, meaning they serve as a food source for those animals. Butterflies are useful to humans because they provide an indication of the health of the environment where they are found. Some species are very sensitive to changes in the environment in which they live. If a species is found in a particular place, this can be a sign that nature is thriving there. Conversely, the disappearance of a species may indicate that nature is not thriving. Caterpillars are also dependent on specific plants as food sources, so the presence of a butterfly species also says something about the presence of a plant. And butterflies are, of course, very beautiful!
