Thick shelled river mussel
Since 1967, the thick shelled river mussel has disappeared from our country due to water pollution and canalisation. The riverine area, its preferred habitat, is now suitable once again. The thick shelled river mussel is perhaps just as important to river life as the salmon and the otter. This is because it filters the water. Thick shelled river mussels can filter up to 40 litres of water a day, thereby helping to purify rivers.
