Soil disturbance and its key role in nature

Soil disturbance – the turning over and breaking up of the soil by animals such as wild boars, badgers and earthworms – plays a crucial role in a healthy ecosystem. Through their digging and rooting behaviour, these animals mix the soil layers, improve air and water permeability, and help to distribute nutrients. This leads to greater plant diversity and offers new opportunities for countless other animals. This drawing by ARK illustrator Jeroen Helmer clearly shows how important soil disturbance is for a vibrant, resilient natural environment.
