The pedunculate oak a keystone species
An oak tree needs room to reach its full potential. Large grazers such as horses and cattle help it by eating young trees that compete for light and nutrients. During the stability phase, hundreds of species of invertebrates, fungi, birds and mammals help the oak tree reach retirement age. ARK illustrator Jeroen Helmer created a beautiful illustration of all this life in and around the pedunculate oak.
