The bull pit a keystone process
We have had to do without them in our landscape for roughly a thousand years. But with the return of large wild grazers, the so-called bull pits of cattle and bison are also making a comeback. The bull practices its strength in a bull pit to prepare for rutting season. During the rutting season, bulls challenge each other. The strongest bull gets to mate with the best cow. Many insects and pioneer plants make use of the bare ground.
This image by ARK illustrator Jeroen Helmer shows the key role of bull pits.
